Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion can be used to reduce irregularities in the surface of the skin associated with scar tissue. This involves the removal of the skin surface with special equipment and usually involves general anesthesia. It might be helpful where the scar is raised above the surrounding skin surface but is less useful when the scar is sunken or pitted.
Steroid injections
A course of steroid injections will help to soften and flatten a hypertrophic or keloid scars. Steroid injected into the scar itself and very little is absorbed into the bloodstream, so the minimal side effects. Injections repeated at intervals of 4-6 weeks and given under medical supervision.
Surgery
Every surgical removal will always leave a new scar and will take up to two years to recover. The operation will remove the scars but can be used to change its position. Sometimes, the operation will actually make a new scar, although the overall performance increases. Surgery may be required to release the tight scar near the joints that restrict movement. In the case of hypertrophic and keloid scars, there is a very high risk of recurrence of excessive scar tissue after surgery.
Laser Surgery & Resurfacing
Like operations, the role of laser surgery in the management of limited scars. Color red scars can be improved with vascular laser. This also has suggested that removing the surface layer of skin with carbon dioxide laser may help to flatten scars. However, there is little long-term studies to prove effectiveness and safety of this therapy. It is important to establish that a trained medical practitioner to do any laser therapy with experience in repairing scars.
Pressure Garments
Pressure Garments used only under the supervision of the medical profession. They are most often used for Burn Scars and very often applied 3-4 weeks after the fire when the wound has healed. Pressure Garments made to fit like a second skin of elastic fabric and is usually made to measure. They work well when used 24 hours a day for 6-12 months, and very often in combination with silicone gel sheet. Mode of action is not fully understood, although probably kept that pressure on the surface of blood vessels play a role during the period of several months, the scar becomes more soft and flat. Radiotherapy
Low dose, superficial radiotherapy may reduce recurrence rates hypertrophic and keloid scars after surgery. This is effective in approximately 70% of cases but is reserved for cases of the most serious because of the possibility of having a long-term side effects.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a technique that uses special equipment to freeze the scar tissue using liquid nitrogen. Research shows that this technique is only effective in about 30% of cases and is mainly used to improve the scar on her shoulder or back.
Liposuction
Liposuction involves the removal of fat from under the skin to normal. This has a limited role in the contour around the scars basin.
Collagen Injections
Collagen can be injected under the sunken scar in order to build the skin level. However, the effect is temporary and the injections must be repeated periodically. There is also the risk of allergic reactions.
Silicone Gel Sheets
Widely used in the treatment of red and raised scars by occupational therapists, dermatologists, physiotherapy, plastic surgeons and other medical professionals. See below for Self-Use Treatment for more information.
